Production plant for Lewatit® ion exchange resins and Lewabrane® membrane filtration technology in Bitterfeld

LANXESS has  highly modern production facilities with the best infrastructure in Bitterfeld-Wolfen (Germany), where Lewatit® ion exchange resins and Lewabrane®  reverse-osmosis membrane elements are being produced.

The Bitterfeld plant produces exclusively monodisperse resins of the latest development in gel and macroporous types. The plant was built  in 1998 but it is still the most-modern and largest of its kind, worldwide. It has a capacity of more than 25,000 metric tons.

Since 2010 the business unit has a  second production facility in Bitterfeld-Wolfen where Lewabrane® reverse-osmosis membranes are produced. An area totaling some 4,000 square meters had been set aside for research & development as well as application development laboratories, logistics areas and offices next to the new, state-of-the-art production facility.

The basis for successful development work in Bitterfeld is a well-established regional and international cooperation network. A good example is the project "Innovative Membranspacer" (Mar 2016 - Feb 2019) aiming for an improved reverse osmosis process through better energy efficiency as well as durability of Lewabrane® reverse-osmosis membranes. The work is being done together with the colleagues from the Fraunhofer IMWS in Halle (Saxony-Anhalt). This project is funded by the European Union.
