Steam is an important energy carrier in the chemical and petrochemical industries. Generated centrally, it is conveyed via pipe bridges to the points of consumption. Ion exchange resins protect this infrastructure of boilers, pipelines and heat exchangers against scale formation and corrosion.

Demineralized water is an important industrial solvent. Untreated water can be purified with Lewatit® ion exchange resins, Lewabrane® membrane elements for reverse osmosis or a combination of both depending on the requirements that have to be met. Waste water from chemical production plants must also be treated thoroughly and reliably in order to avoid polluting nature and the environment. Ion exchange and membrane processes make important contributions in this area as well.

Ion exchange resins have proven their worth even under extreme conditions, for example in the treatment of highly concentrated, hot brines for chloralkali electrolysis. They reliably remove alkaline earth and heavy metal ions, thereby protecting the membranes from contamination in the eco-friendly and energy-efficient membrane process. Even mercury, which is still found in the brine cycle after the conversion from the mercury cell to the membrane method, can be reliably eliminated by ion exchange resins. Other process solutions can be treated as well, such as pickling acids, rinse water or electroplating baths.

Virtually no processes in the chemical industry can do without catalysts. They accelerate reactions and control their selectivity. Energy-efficient and resource-conserving processes in particular are often dependent on catalysts.

Ion exchange resins are firmly established in the chemical industry as versatile and efficient catalysts. They are used, for instance, in acid-catalyzed saponification, ester and ether synthesis, for example in the production of biodiesel, but also (with metal ions) in hydrogenation reactions. A catalyst can always be removed quickly and easily after the reaction.
