June 15, 2016, Shanghai – On the morning of June 15, the 2nd LANXESS China “Clean Water for Better Life” University Students Research Competition was kicked off at the LANXESS booth at the 9th Aquatech China Exhibition in Shanghai. Ming Cheng Chien, CEO of LANXESS Greater China, Zhihong Yu, President of China WTO Tribune, LANXESS volunteers and students representatives attended the kick-off ceremony.

The 1st LANXESS China “Clean Water for Better Life” University Students Research Competition was jointly organized by specialty chemicals company LANXESS, and the China WTO Tribune in 2015. The competition aims at encouraging college students to present their original and inspiring proposals to protect water resources and solve water related issues among today’s intense environmental challenges.

This year’s competition is of a larger scale than that of last year: more universities and college students have participated for more funded projects. This year, the competition mainly opens to students from universities along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Many research projects have been collected from the area and 15 of them has been selected to be funded.

“We hope that students from different universities can learn from each other on this platform we have established. We expect they can benefit from the competition, raising their awareness and capability of water protection and also become more creative and skillful in helping tackle social challenges.” said Ming Cheng Chien.

In June, 2015, when the Water Pollution Prevention Action Plan(Ten measures for water protection) was issued, LANXESS took the opportunity to work with China WTO Tribune on the 1st LANXESS China “Clean Water for Better Life” University Students Research Competition. The competition was open to five universities along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River: Wuhan University, Hohai University, Jiangnan University, East China University of Science and Technology, and Tongji University. In the almost-four-month period, 49 students from 10 teams made full use of their knowledge, did down-to-earth field researches, tried to solve problems creatively and proposed new solutions for water protection.

The competition attracted wide attention from the public and the industry. Through the WeChat account of LANXESS, 7470 votes were collected during the public voting process. The first competition formed a new  cooperation model among multiple parties, including LANXESS, China WTO Tribune, universities, other media and China Association of Environmental Protection Industry and etc.

The competition this year consists of four phases. During Phase I (May, 2016), project proposals from student unions and interest groups at universities along the Middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River were collected; In June, the organizing committee reviewed the proposals and selected those to be funded, and held the kick-off ceremony; from June to August, project teams will work on their projects under the guidance of LANXESS volunteers; from September to October, all teams will present their research results to jury members who will review and decide on the outstanding projects to be awarded.
